Okehampton is the gateway to Dartmoor and dates back to Saxon times. It is an old market town noted for the remains of the famous 13th century Okehampton Castle built high above the River Okement and also its fine church tower.
During the 18th century, the White Hart was the principal Post Inn of Okehampton and many major events, including election dinners, were held there, in fact William Pitt the elder was a frequent visitor to the hotel.
The White Hart provided many horse drawn vehicles for local transport such as wagonettes, gigs, jingles, fly and the Landau and on market day there could be as many as 100 horses stabled at the hotel.
Nowadays the White Hart is still a popular stopping place for coach parties and can see as many as 250 diners sitting down to eat in the hotel's function suites.
